Psychology of Modern Work

Why modern technology exhausts productivity, and how human cognition is left behind.

By Qimra Fatima

More is less

To begin with, the amount of technology we have might be competing with the amount of moves available in a well-executed chess game. In simple words, we are doing technology bigger than ourselves and our minds are struggling to adapt to it. Why? We have thousands of tools, 13 tabs opened at every search, myriad of reels to scroll, yes, take github, gmail, notion, jira, slack, AI as examples! Yes, exactly that's why!

Economics explains it this way: When a consumer has too many choices, a state of enigma ensues such that the consumer loses himself in the choices, having his decision-making ability affected. That's why many companies still struggle to decide which tools to buy and which not.

Through a psychological lens, this phenomena was coined by Barry Schwartz as "paradox of choice". If we delve deeper into this crux, we can see that it gets applied to the excessive immersion of AI and technology too, which, ironically, is exhausting productivity instead of boosting it and that is nothing but a sophism, a fallacy.

Tech changes, minds don't

"You were begotten into this world by your mother," a child would say, "you were begotten into the world by God," a theist would say, "you were begotten by nature," an atheist would say. Either way, you were begotten years ago. "By who," that is not the question, "but how," that is the question, indeed.

Let me enlighten you: Humans were made to focus on one task at a time. As per cognitive psychology and neuroscience, there is no such thing as 'multi-tasking' so, when you think you are multi-tasking when you hop onto jira while committing a repo on github alongside chewing the gum you have in your mouth since 3 hours and 14 minutes, you are mistaken. That's task-switching, not multi-tasking because it simply doesn't exist. To put it simply, human minds don't evolve at the speed of tech and AI. Your intelligence is mostly from the time you were born at with minimal evolutionary additions or deductions overtime however, this is not the case with technology. Human brains evolved thousands of years ago, we evolved to solve one problem at a time; we did not evolve for dozens of notifications every half minute. Biology changes slowly, Technology changes every 6 months.

The productivity illusion

We mistake activity for productivity! Let's understand this through this example: imagine carrying grocery. One bag: easy to carry, you are in control, hand doesn't hurt. Ten bags: hard to carry, can fall, no control. Why? Because your mind is still stuck in the first 5 heavy bags you bought so, the new 5 bags exasperate you. That's exactly what happens with managing and switching between all; emails, google meet, documents etc. Every switch costs attention, every new task demands cognition and again, cognitive abilities could not be divided between tasks. That is exactly why more is less as tech changes, minds don't so, productivity is an illusion when it is just activity and not creativity.

Say why to AI

Why one after the other. First GPT then, gemini, then, claude and we haven't stopped since then. Chatgpt to write better, gemini to write better, claude to build better. What's next? Some xy AI to 'think' better? So, before you buy another tool for your employees, another AI, ask this: does this create work or reduce work? Because now, employees have even more places to search from. Instead of cutting work, it sometimes creates work incorporated just for the sake of it. A good AI shouldn't augment searching, it should increase answering without having to look for them.

HusnAI says howdy

When other AI tools are busy evolving and leaving humanity behind, HusnAI is busy humanizing your whole tool stack, connecting slack, gmail, linear, jira and others like neighbors who might grow to abhor each other under shady smiles, covering the gossips behind those smiles. You don't have to be the sherlock holmes of your own questions, Husn asks for you, observes for you and answers for you without making you search for anything. Husn is a daddy here, he doesn't need to be configured across your data or tool stack, no tricky or time-consuming setup is needed. It is not your productivity tool, no, no, no! It is your cognitive buddy.

Let's respect future

A successful future wouldn't be the one with most AI, c'mon! It would not be the one that enhances mind rather protects minds. Protects from burnout, protects from workload, protects from demotivation! And, hey, we cannot really afford wasting water to feed poor AI. Let's waste it on good AI if it has to be wasted either way. And, a good AI doesn't rip attention, it respects attention.

In a nutshell

With technology reigning and humans giving AI lap dance for free, we need to understand the importance of digital literacy so, you can distinguish between good AI / HusnAI and bad AI because according to a recent theory, the last world war is tended be over scarcity of water. The challenge ahead is not creating more technology, or, creating an environment-friendly one but creating technology that understands humans, keeps them humane and iterates excellence. Conclusively, modern work has changed faster than the human brain, and until AI is designed to work with our psychology instead of against it, true productivity will remain an illusion.
